Douglas Bell

(1 customer review)

Douglas Bell (aka Troy Porter) is an African-American writer and Buddhist living in Houston, Texas.

Douglas Bell envisioned Love Cake as a compliment and a continuation of Cakewalk. In Cakewalk, Bell focused on Bryan’s journey to find self-love such that we never got to see what was indeed possible for Bryan and Nadia as a couple. Love Cake is about romantic love transformed into allyship and love for a community outside your own.

Love Cake asks us to accept within all our societal constructs that each of us is simply trying to live our lives as we see it. Love Cake is meant to be an example of what cis-trans relationships, allyship, and parenting queer kids could look like when authentic love is shown.

Given all the pressures (external and internal) that we all face, Bell believes a strong spiritual life supported through a regular meditation practice can show us perspective, gratitude, and, most importantly, empathy. These qualities allow us to be vulnerable with ourselves first, ultimately leading us to extend compassion to each other. Empathy can be the catalyst for accepting the advantages of privilege, recognizing the need for allyship, and just being able to say ‘I love you.’
